Six killed as mini lorry falls into roadside ditch

BIJAPUR, JUNE 18. Six people, including three women, were killed
and 60 were injured in a road mishap near Shirur village in
Bagalkot taluk in the early hours of Monday.
The ghastly accident took place at about 1.30 a.m. when a Mudhol-
bound mini lorry fell into a roadside ditch when its driver tried
to overtake another vehicle. Six persons were killed on the spot.
Among the injured, the condition of four passengers, who have
been shifted to KLE Hospital in Belgaum, is said to be critical.
As many as 38 persons, who suffered multiple fractures and
injuries, have been admitted to Bagalkot Civil Hospital and the
rest were discharged after being administered first aid.
The dead have been identified as Gubbavva Badiger (45), Shantavva
Rathod (22), Gundavva Rathod (25), Chinanand Rathod (16) and
Mahant Chauvan (26). The five were from Chikkakodagali Tanda in
Bagalkot District. They were on their way to Mudhol for laying
cement concrete for a building roof.
The name of the vehicle cleaner, who was also killed in the
mishap, is not known. According to sources, the mini lorry was
carrying 75 passengers.
The Superintendent of Police, Bagalkot, Mr. Siddanna, visited the
spot. The Bagalkot Rural Police, who have registered a case, are
investigating.
