Facile win for Humpy

HYDERABAD, JUNE.18. WGM-elect Koneru Humpy scored a facile, 41- move win over IM Ferece Nanad (Elo 2433) in the fifth round game of the Hotel Lipa International Grandmasters chess tournament held in Hungary, according to information received here on Monday.

Humpy, playing white, opted for Reti Opening, which saw Ferece on his third move (Bf5) and fourth move (Qd7) prepare himself for Kingside castling. However, much to his chagrin, Humpy had fathomed it well and played c3 and soon b4 to attack the rival's queenside. After this, both tried to move the king to the centre. After an intense battle, Humpy with her 11th move - Nb5 posed a threat to Nc5. This forced Ferece to play b6 and defend his forces which however saw his position weakened on queen side.

After the position got equalised by the 14th move, Humpy's king was in the centre. She then played Nc4 and soon Ne5 to gain positional advantage. This saw both the king and queen of the rival under threat and saw him slip into time pressure. He had to make seven moves in one minute and later Humpy duly won the game.

After five rounds, Horvath Adam with four points is leading the table, while Humpy and Osomistvan with 3.5 points shared the second spot.
