Best cricketer award for Rohan Gavaskar

KOLKATA, JUNE 20. Rohan Gavaskar has been adjudged the best cricketer of the year by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) here on Wednesday. The middle-order left-handed batsman will be felicitated by the CAB at a function later this month.

Gavaskar, who missed the award the previous year by a narrow margin to veteran left-arm spinner Utpal Chatterjee, was Bengal's most consistent batsman last season. This was his maiden award from his adopted state.

The CAB has also decided to declare wicketkeeper batsman Deep Dasgupta as the gentleman cricketer of the year for the newly instituted trophy in memory of late Pankaj Roy. Dasgupta's good showing last season earned him a place in the Indian team's camp.
