Police put on alert
By Barun Das Gupta
GUWAHATI, JUNE 20. All the Deputy Commissioners and
Superintendents of Police of the districts had been alerted to
keep a vigil on the law and order situation in the State, the
Assam Chief Minister, Mr. Tarun Gogoi, said here today.
Mr. Gogoi told reporters he was apprehensive that a ``Manipur-
like'' situation might develop in Assam, resulting in largescale
breach of law and order, because of the Centre's decision to
extend the Naga ceasefire to the neighbouring States, including
Assam.
He said during his recent meeting with the Union Home Minister,
Mr. L. K. Advani in New Delhi, he had informed him of Assam's
opposition to the Centre's decision on ceasefire extension and
requested him to rescind it.
Mr. Advani had assured Mr. Gogoi that he did not think a
``Manipur-type'' situation would develop in other States, but in
case of trouble the Centre would extend all help.
Mr. Gogoi said the State Government would create the post of
Vigilance Commissioner within a fortnight to whom specific cases
of corruption could be reported by the public. The incumbent
would be a retired official with the rank of Chief Secretary.
Vigilance Officers would also be appointed in the districts, he
said.
