Profile of a freedom fighter
THE IRON MAN OF KARNATAKA - Hallikeri Gudleppa (G.V. Hallikeri):
Sarojini B. Shintri, K. Raghavendra Rao; Dakshina Bharat Hindi
Prachar Sabha (Karnataka), D.C. Compound, Dharwad-580001. Rs.
100.
IF THE qualities of men in different yugas described in our
Puranas are true, and if the four yugas can be compressed into a
century, then G.V. Hallikeri, the veteran Congressman of
Karnataka born in 1906, traversed through the first three yugas,
Krita, Threta and Dwapara and passed away when Kali started. We
are now seeing the indescribable perversion of values that people
like Hallikeri strove to uphold.
He was a brilliant student of mathematics, between 1928-42 he
participated in the Salt Satyagraha and Quit India movements,
worked with S. Nijalingappa in building up the Karnataka Pradesh
Congress Committee, served as chairman of the Karnataka
Legislative Council between 1962 and 1966 and again in 1970- 71,
and passed away in 1971.
This volume, a well-written life history of this rare leader,
gives touching accounts of his sacrifices in the cause of the
nation and Karnataka. The younger generations who go through this
book can realise the greatness of our freedom fighters. The Hindi
Prachar Sabha has done well to bring out this publication.
