One more year for Special Courts: Jayalalithaa
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, JUNE 27. The term of the Special Courts, trying cases
against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, will be
extended by another year.
Announcing this today at the Secretariat, Ms. Jayalalithaa said
she wanted to put an end to speculation on the fate of the
Special Courts whose term is to expire on June 30. ``I find that
a needless controversy is stirred up in the media,'' she said.
In the normal course, the term of the Special Courts would have
been extended by a year. This time too, their term would be
extended by another year, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa denied that she planned to seek a ``pardon''.
Noting that there were reports suggesting this possibility, she
said they merely made ``interesting reading.'' Asked how she
planned to get elected to the State Assembly to ensure her
continuance as Chief Minister beyond the six-month period, she
said there were four more months to go before she needed to
become a member of the legislature.
