KC(B) protests against UDF sidelining Pillai
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 29. The Kerala Congress(B) today
strongly protested against the UDF leadership's action sidelining
its chairman, Mr. R. Balakrishna Pillai.
In a resolution at its State committee meeting, the party said
that the UDF leadership had failed to do justice to Mr. Pillai
who was one of the founder member of the UDF and had always
fought the LDF tooth and nail, particularly during the last five
years.
The resolution said that Mr. Pillai did not falter even when
several politically motivated court cases were foisted on him,
and continued to be in the forefront of the UDF and the various
agitations it led. The resolution also recalled Mr. Pillai's
participation in the Kerala Mochana Yatra, undertaken by Mr. A.K.
Antony from Manjeswaram to Parassala.
It underscored the fact that Mr. Pillai had played a prominent
role in bringing back to the UDF several powerful social
organisations, which had been responsible for its electoral
defeat in 1996. ``There is no doubt that Mr. Pillai's
farsightedness and political acumen also had an important role in
ensuring a creditable victory to the UDF," the resolution added.
The party reminded the UDF leadership that its contributions to
the victory of the coalition could not be under-emphasised even
though it had won only two seats. When most of the coalition
partners always attempted to increase their relative strengths in
the Assembly, Parliament and other committees, Mr. Pillai always
strove to ensure the victory of the Congress candidates to
Parliament from his strong-holds.
Presiding over the State committee meeting, Mr. Pillai
reportedly expressed dissatisfaction at the way the UDF
Government is functioning. He wanted the Antony Government to
take urgent action to implement the UDF's election promises. He
wanted the State Government to take hard decisions to enable the
State to overcome the huge financial burden left behind by the
LDF Government.
The meeting was attended by the Transport Minister, Mr. K.B.
Ganesh Kumar, and other office-bearers of the party.
