NBA activists in satyagraha huts
By Our Special Correspondent
BARODA, JULY 6. About 50 activists of the Narmada Bachao Andolan
led by its leader, Ms. Medha Patkar, launched the `Jal-Samadhi'
satyagraha at Domkhedi (in Maharashtra) and Jalsindhi (Madhya
Pradesh), on the banks of the Narmada river in protest against
the Sardar Sarovar project in Gujarat.
While Ms. Patkar declared that the submergence in the monsoon
this year would be ``most unjust, illegal and fatal and the
people would resist''.Hundreds of tribals from Maharashtra,
Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat cheered the `satyagrahis' as they took
position in the ``satyagraha huts'' to stay put even if the water
level in the river rises. The NBA claimed thatabout 70 to 80 more
villages would be submerged if the level rises in the river and
the people in these villages were yet to be resettled contrary to
the assurance given to the court.
