Seminar on information revolution from July 15

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JULY 10. A three-day seminar on `Information Revolution: Rural and Local Administration (e-governance in Telugu and Indian Languages)' will be held on July 15, 16 and 17 at the Literacy House, Andhra Mahila Sabha Academic Campus.

Talking to presspersons, Mr. Mallikharjuna Rao, general secretary of the Society for Computer Applications in Indian Languages, Dr. Y.N. Rao, convener of the seminar, Prof. Nagamma Reddy and Mr. B. Subbarayan, secretary, Literacy House, here on Tuesday said that the seminar would concentrate on important issues to the Government and people.

Bridging information gap between rural and urban population through language technology, use of Indian languages on various operating systems, compliance with standard character coding for Indian scripts of the Bureau of Indian Standards and machine aids for reading, writing and translation within Indian languages and English were matters of focus.

Apart from these, they said, how to use PIKS (Public Information Kiosks) or computer `dhabas' for e-governance would also be extensively discussed.

While the seminar was expected to lead to the formation of a forum for pooling Indian language technologies and enabling setting up of PIKS `dhabas', it would also result in identification of problems in e-governance in local languages and seek solutions.

An exhibition would be open to people during the three days. Those interested in taking part may register their names at the CLC (Computer Literacy Centre). Further details contact can be had from Mr. B. Subbarayan or Mr. B. Mallikharjuna Rao on telephone numbers 7096464 and 7098406.
