China hopes for 'positive' results from summit

BEIJING, JULY 13. China today hoped that the summit meeting between the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, and the Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, would yield ``positive'' results.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ms. Zhang Qiyue, also confirmed a meeting between Gen. Musharraf and the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Lu Shuling, ahead of the summit meeting. Gen. Musharraf considered the summit as a ``welcome step towards march for peace,'' Ms. Zhang quoted the Pakistan President as telling the Ambassador. ``He said Pakistan was giving utmost importance to the summit.''

``It is our view that the improvement of ties between Pakistan and India serves the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries and is also conducive to peace, stability and development of south Asia,'' she said.
