By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, JULY 15. A suspected naxalite belonging to the outlawed People's War Group (PWG) was killed in an exchange of fire with the police on the outskirts of Kammampalli village of Manthani Mutharam mandal on Sunday.

The Superintendent of Police, Dr. R. S. Praveen Kumar, told ``The Hindu'' that about 10 naxalites laid an ambush by planting a landmine for the police party, which was returning on foot from the village after inspecting the security arrangements at the polling station. Even before the police could reach the spot, the naxalites triggered the landmine.

Immediately, policemen took positions and opened fire on the naxalites. In the exchange of fire, one naxalite was killed. A short weapon was recovered from the scene. The other naxalites escaped under cover of thick greenery.

The slain naxal has been identified as the PWG Manthani CO, Gopu Rajaiah alias Ashok. He carried a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs.
