NSG cover for Karunanidhi
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, JULY 19. The former Chief Minister and DMK president,
Mr. M. Karunanidhi, is to be provided security cover by the
National Security Guards (NSG) very soon.
The Union Home Ministry took the decision and offered this
special protection to Mr. Karunanidhi in the wake of the recent
developments in Tamil Nadu.
The details are being worked out, and specially-trained NSG
commandos will be flown in from New Delhi to provide round-the-
clock proximate security to the veteran politician.
This arrangement comes within weeks of Mr. Karunanidhi
surrendering the ``police protection'' provided by the State
Government. He had written to the Home Secretary early this month
- when he was lodged at the Chennai central prison - stating that
his personal securitymen could do nothing when personnel of the
CB-CID and city police barged into his house to effect the
midnight arrest on June 30.
When asked about the move, Mr. Karunanidhi said, ``I know only as
much as you do. I do not know about the nature or the details of
the cover.''
