Basic phone services for one company

NEW DELHI, JULY 21. In a major victory for the policy pushed by
the Communications Minister, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, the Government
today signed licence agreements for basic phone services for 16
States and cities with a private company, Reliance
Communications.
The company becomes the first private firm to win the rights to
provide connectivity in practically the entire country. It may
now make a bid for the national long distance licence.
But the company has to fork out performance bank guarantees for
Rs. 1,592 crores.
