Cong.-TRS accord on Warangal mandal posts
By Our Staff Reporter
WARANGAL, JULY 21. The Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi
(TRS) have reached an understanding to share power in 37 out of
50 Mandal Parishads where they together have strength in Warangal
district while leaving the matter of tie-up for contest to Zilla
Parishad chairmanship to further discussions.
The two parties have reached an accord whereby they will set up
candidates for election to the presidentship of Mandal Parishads
on Sunday where they have a majority on their own and seek the
support of the other party where they do not have majority but
stand a fair chance if they come together. The choice of vice-
presidentship and co-opted members will be reciprocal between
them depending upon whoever gets the presidentship.
At a joint news conference here on Saturday, the leaders of the
two parties said they had identified nine mandals where the
Congress had majority in the parishads on its own and 11 mandals
where the Congress will contest for the presidentship with the
support of TRS. Similarly, the TRS will contest for the
presidentship on its own in ten mandals and seek the support of
the Congress in seven other mandals.
The leaders struck different postures in the matter of election
to the Zilla Parishad chairmanship with the TRS representative
claiming that it was a decision left to the State body while the
Congress leaders asserted that the issue would be settled at the
district-level only.
The mandals where the Congress will contest on its own are
Kuravi, Dornakal, Mahbubabad, Maripeda, Devaruppala, Kodakandla,
Chennaraopet, Mangapet and Shayampet. The Congress will seek the
support of the TRS in the following mandals where it does not
have majority and they include Lingala Ghanpur, Parvatagiri,
Kesamudram, Narasimhulapet, Gudur, Tadvai, Geesugonda,
Dharmasagar, Regonda, Venkatapur and Jafargarh.
The TRS will contest on its own in Bhupalpalli, Station Ghanpur,
Cherial, Bachannapet, Maddur, Narmetta, Hanamkonda, Nallabelli,
Mulug and Chitial mandals. It will take the support of Congress
at Hasanparthi, Eturunagaram, Jangaon, Parkal, Narsampet,
Raghunathpalli and Sangem.
A senior leader of TRS in the district, Mr. Mandadi Satyanarayana
Reddy, and the District Congress Committee (DCC) president, Mr.
Ch. Srinivas Reddy, said at the news conference that all steps
would be taken to implement the understanding in letter and
spirit. The deal was struck mainly to break the monopoly of the
TDP in district politics.
They maintained that the understanding was reached to honour the
anti-TDP mandate given by people of Telangana in the just
concluded polls and also to capitalise on it. They saw the
erosion of the TDP as a major political force in the district
given the results of the elections.
In regard to the election to Zilla Parishad chairmanship, the DCC
president merely said that the Congress would be ready with a
candidate who shall be a unanimous choice of the party and he
will plunge into the race based on the negotiations with the TRS
till midnight on Sunday by which time the results of Mandal
Parishad presidential polls will be known.
