93 feared dead in Chinese coal mine blast

BEIJING, JULY 23. About 93 miners are feared dead in an explosion at an illegal coal mine in eastern China, the State media and police said today. The blast trapped 106 miners on Sunday morning at a small coal mine in Xuzhou of Jiangsu province. Thirteen persons were rescued, the official news agency, Xinhua, said.

Police said they detained the contractor of the coal mine. Rescuers recovered 16 bodies. The State television said 77 more were missing.
