Nepal Govt., Maoist rebels announce truce
KATHMANDU, JULY 23. The Nepal Government and the Maoist rebels
said today they would stop all offensive action against each
other to end a bloody rebellion and pave the way for peace talks
in the Himalayan nation.
``Instructions have already been given to security personnel not
to carry out any action (against the rebels)'', Nepal's new Prime
Minister, Mr. Sher Bahadur Deuba, said.
The Maoist Party chief, Mr. Prachanda, urged guerilla fighters
``to suspend all offensive actions for the present to create an
atmosphere for talks'' with the government. But neither said how
long the truce would last.
