Cong. nominee becomes ZP chief through lottery
By Our Correspondent
VIZIANAGARAM. JULY 23. In a nerve-racking exercise for the Zilla
Parishad chairperson, the Congress nominee, Ms. Botcha Jhansi,
wife of Mr.B. Satyanarayana, Lok Sabha member from Bobbili, was
declared elected in the lottery drawn by the district election
authority and Collector, Mr. Harpreeth Singh, at the Zilla
Parishad Hall, here on Monday. The TDP nominee was the former
minister, Ms.Padala Aruna. There was jubilation in the Congress
camp.
The lottery system was adopted after both the parties which have
an equal strength of 17 ZPTCs in a council of 34 locked in a tie
again in the raise of hands. The exercise continued for vice-
chairmanship also. The vice-chairmanship went to the TDP nominee
Mr. M. Taviti Naidu. Earlier, in a similar exercise, the Congress
and the TDP shared the two co-option members. The members are
Messrs. George Gollapalli (Congress) and Sk. Sardar (TDP).
There were no defections though the District Congress Committee
had not issued whip for the chairperson and vice-chairman posts.
This is the first time that a woman would head the Zilla
Parishad. This is also the first time that the Congress made
inroads into the TDP bastion in the district. The Vizianagaram
Mandal Parishad had already gone in favour of the Congress in a
similar exercise on Sunday.
