One-way traffic at Charminar introduced

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY, 23. On the first day of its implementation, the one-way traffic movement from Darul Shifa to Charminar here on Monday, announced as part of the Charminar pedestrianisation project, was more or less smooth. However, the uni-directional traffic from Charminar to Madina moved at snail's pace and was marked by frequent jams.

There were initial glitches in the implementation of the new traffic flow rules. Initially, the police prevented the autos from plying between Nayapul and Gulzar House contrary to the earlier announcement. This led to some wrangle with the local traders protesting. Their argument was that their business would be affected if autos were not allowed to ply.

The matter was resolved only after the MIM legislators led by Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi called on the Commissioner of Police, Mr. P. Ramulu. Later the DCP Traffic, Mr. M.V. Dinakar Prasad, visited the area and discussed the issue with traders. He explained to them that autos were not allowed to ply to gauge the traffic flow pattern on different routes.

Subsequently, the police decided to prohibit the movement of autos from Nayapul to Gulzar House between 8 a.m and 11 a.m. to facilitate free flow of the heavy vehicles from Charminar to Madina.

But both the roads from Gulzar House to Etebar Chowk via Kali Kaman and from Alijah Kotla to Charminar via Sardar Mahal would always be strictly `one-way'.

The Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee, in a statement pointed out that there was no need to ban the movement of light motor vehicles from Nayapul to Gulzar House. The association appealed to the Government to take a realistic approach.
