Steps to make Malayalam as official language

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 23. The district official language committee which met here today decided to expedite measures to make Malayalam the official language in designated departments. The meeting resolved to frame codes, manuals, forms and rules in these departments in Malayalam.

The ratio of Malayalam and English typewriting machines will be maintained at 4:1. Boards announcing `Malayalam, our administrative language' and `Petitions and suggestions to be given in Malayalam' will be installed in offices. The name boards of offices, officials and their designation will have to be in Malayalam. Foundation stones and inaugural plaques will also be in the vernacular.

An official pressnote quoting the proceedings of the meeting said the Government was committed to making Malayalam the official language at all levels of administration. It said all the orders issued in accordance with the relevant Act were statutory. The pressnote added that violation of the orders would invite action against the officials concerned.

The meeting decided to provide Malayalam typewriters to Government offices and to train typists. The Official Language Department will help in finding the Malayalam equivalent of technical terms in English. Solvency, creamy layer and valuation certificates will be issued in Malayalam.

The progress of various departments in making Malayalam the official language was reviewed at the meeting. It was decided to convene the taluk-level official language committee every four months. The meeting appealed to all employees to cooperate in the effort.
