SC reserves order on plea against Arundhati Roy

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 2. The Supreme Court today reserved orders on a contempt petition against the Booker Prize winner, Ms. Arundhati Roy, the Narmada Bachao Andolan activist, Ms. Medha Patkar, and others, even as the two stood by their affidavits and submitted that the apex court might consider proceeding against them if it found that the remarks were ``contemptuous''.

A Bench, comprising Mr. Justice G.B. Pattanaik and Ms. Justice Ruma Pal, reserved verdict after hearing Ms. Patkar's counsel, Ms. Roy, in person, and counsel for advocate, Mr. Prashant Bhushan, on a petition filed by some advocates seeking action against them for raising ``derogatory'' remarks against the judiciary and Supreme Court judges during a ``dharna'' in front of the court last year.
