Creche for staff, patients of Stanley Hospital

CHENNAI, AUG. 8. A creche for use of the staff and patients of Stanley Hospital will be constructed within the hospital premises, Mr. S. Semmalai, Health Minister, said here on Tuesday in response to a request from doctors.

He was speaking at the valedictory function of the World Breastfeeding Week celebrations, conducted by Stanley Hospital.

Mr. D. Jayakumar, Electricity Minister, suggested that a network of NGOs, doctors and community-based organisations be formed to take up awareness-building consistently. Prizes were distributed to the babies who participated in the well-baby clinic and those who won the painting contests. Dr. Raja Sambandan, Director of Medical Education, Dr. C. Ravindranath, Dean, Stanley Medical College, and Dr. R. Prema, Additional Professor, Social paediatrics department, also spoke.

At Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, Dr. Indra Venkatarao, former HOD, Paediatrics department delivered a lecture on the importance of breast-feeding. The function was organised along with the Centre for Health Education and Development (CHED).

The Chennai Corporation Deputy Mayor, Ms. P. Jayachandravadana, distributed prizes to winners of the well-baby contest.

At the Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital, the celebration started on August 1, with a formal inauguration by Dr. B. R. Nammalwar, Medical Director.

DESH, an NGO working in the area of AIDS prevention, with particular reference to Reproductive Child Health, held a rally in Triplicane to commemorate the breast-feeding week.
