Rushmi loses

NEW DELHI, AUG. 8. The sixth-seeded Rushmi Chakravarti lost 2-6, 6-2, 5-7 to qualifier Chin-Wei Chan of Chinese Taipei in the pre- quarterfinals of the $ 10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament in Bangkok on Wednesday.

The 432nd ranked Rushmi could not get off to a good start after having played a three-hour duel against Megha Vakharia the previous day, when she saved two matchpoints to ensure herself a WTA point.

``It was another three-hour match today, and it was tough to play in the humid conditions. I was not able to play well in the first set, and that proved a setback,'' said Rushmi.

She was down 2-4 in the third set, but did well to be on par before the Taipei girl pulled through with her better fitness. Rushmi, however, managed to win the first round of doubles in partnership with Sai Jayalakshmy, who had lost her singles first round on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Rushmi and Sai beat Nicole Kriz and Donna McIntyre of Australia 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

The other Indian pair in the competition, Sheethal Goutam and Liza Pereira, which had swept all the four titles in the $ 5000 circuit in India, found the fourth-seeded Indonesians, Romana Tedjakusuma and Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia too hot to win a game.
