Court breather for Govt. on MCH polls
By Our Legal Correspondent
HYDERABAD, AUG. 10. A Division Bench of the A.P. High Court,
comprising the Chief Justice, Mr. Satyabrata Sinha and Mr.
Justice V.V.S. Rao, on Friday directed the State Government to
complete finalising the reservation of wards in the Municipal
Corporation of Hyderabad before December 10. The State Election
Commission has to conduct elections immediately thereafter.
The extension of time for conducting elections was given while
disposing of a writ appeal filed by the Government challenging
the judgment of a single judge, who directed the authorities to
complete the process before November 1. It may be recalled that
the leader of the city Youth Congress, Mr. Prakash Goud, had
filed a writ petition seeking conduct of elections to the MCH
forthwith.
The Government informed the single judge that it needed 195 days
for identification of BCs in the voter list and finalisation of
reservation for various categories. The judge, however, directed
the Government to complete the process within 90 days.
The Government went in appeal and the Bench granted 120 days to
the Government for pre-election process. The Bench granted 80
days for identification of various wards to be reserved for BCs,
SCs, STs and women and 40 days for notifying and finalising
reservations. The maximum limit is December 10.
The SEC has now 60 days for completing the process after the
finalisation of reservation.
