Cradle baby scheme to be revamped

By R. K. Radhakrishnan

CHENNAI, AUG. 18. The Government will revamp the cradle baby scheme by setting up full-fledged reception centres at Madurai, Theni, Dindigul and Dharmapuri districts, apart from revitalising the Salem centre. The primary health centres in these districts will be equipped to receive ``cradle babies.''A ``massive State- sponsored campaign'' will be launched against female infanticide, the Finance Minister, Mr.C.Ponnaiyan, said.

The girl child protection scheme will be restructured at a cost of Rs. 22.7 crores, to ensure increased financial benefits to girls from poor families. For families with only one girl child, and no other children and if either parent undergoes sterilisation, a deposit of Rs. 20,650 will be made by the Government in the child's name.

The interest accruing from this deposit will take care of monthly payment of a minimum of Rs. 150 throughout schooling. At the end of 20 years, Rs. 80,000 will be given to pursue higher studies or defray marriage expenses.

For familes with two girl children and no male child and if either parent has undergone sterilisation, an initial deposit of Rs. 14,450 will be made for each girl by the Government.

A minimum of Rs. 150 will be paid every month and Rs. 40,000 after 20 years.
