A black chapter

Sir,- Mr. Tarun Tejpal and his team have added a black chapter to the history of Indian media, which is known for its freedom and seriousness. I am sure if other Editors allow their reporters to use any means and methods to collect information, they will come out with more sensational and colourful stories than those of Tehelka. Mr. Tejpal and his team must realise that they are in the business of providing news and not making it.

Sir,- Mr. Tejpal's contention could be that he could not have learnt of secrets detrimental to the country's security had he not employed prostitutes. Working on the axiom that one must set a thief to catch one, I stand in defence of Mr. Tejpal, who did an excellent job even while facing the risk of being caught. But the darker aspect - that the shame was also captured on videotape - should be condemned.

As for the Union Home Ministry's announcement that it would examine the investigation to see if laws were breached, I fear that most MPs will not be in favour of Mr. Tejpal's style.
