Effigies of Cong. MPs burnt

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI, AUG. 30. The Assam NCP today reacted sharply to the verbal attack of Mr. Eduardo Faleiro and Mr. Santosh Mohan Deb on Mr. Purno Sangma in Parliament, even as the activists of the party's youth wing burnt the effigies of the two Congress MPs.

Former Assam Chief Minister and State NCP president, Mr. Sarat Chandra Sinha, told newsmen here that Mr. Faleiro's comment in an interview given to a newsweekly, questioning Mr. Sangma's `Indianness' as he was from the North-East which `does not belong to the heartland mainstream' of the country was `anti- national.'

Mr. Sinha said it was unthinkable that a person who had once held the office of Minister of State for External Affairs could make such an atrocious statement.

``Unwittingly, Mr. Faleiro has provided grist to the propaganda mill of the ULFA leaders, Mr. Paresh Barua and Mr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, whose contention is that Assam and the North- East are not part of India,'' the octogenarian leader said.
