DMK backing NDA for narrow ends: CPI (M)

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, SEPT. 5. The DMK chief, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, and the MDMK leader, Mr. Vaiko, who have all along being vociferous supporters of rationalist ideas are now totally silent on the NDA Government move to saffronise education as they want to continue in power at the Centre, Mr. N. Sankariah, CPI (M) State general secretary, alleged today.

Talking to newsmen here, the marxist leader said the National Conference and the Meghalaya Democratic Front, though allies of the NDA, openly aligned with secular forces to oppose the Union Government move, but the DMK and MDMK leaders supported the BJP and the RSS in their ``clandestine'' bid.

He appealed to the leaders of the two parties not to support the RSS and BJP for narrow political ends, to win the favour of the NDA Government in their fight against the AIADMK Government.

The NDA move was a dangerous shift and all should join hands to resist saffronisation of education.

On local bodies elections, Mr. Sankariah said the people would be solidly behind the secular front and the AIADMK-led front would definitely win.

The people were upset with the economic policies of the Union government which had brought misery to the framing community and small and village industries, thanks to indiscriminate import of foreign farm and agro-based products.

To a question, Mr. Sankariah said the debate over the propriety of Ms. Jayalalithaa continuing in office as Chief Minister would have no impact at all in the civic polls.

The marxist leader welcomed the decision of political parties not to politicise the Cauvery issue, and hoped that this would set a healthy trend in strengthening the case of Tamil Nadu in similar inter-State issues.

Hailing the State government decision not to relax the land ceiling laws, he said small and landless farmers should be identified, and given all help to develop waste land so that the rural people would have sufficient money to rejuvenate economy with better purchasing power.

Mr. Sankaraiah expressed the hope that the new TMC chief Mr. G. K. Vasan, would continue to play a crucial role in the crusade against fundamentalist forces, following the lead of his father G. K. Moopanar.

The marxist party would launch a campaign against the ``wrong economic policies'' of the Union Government from September 7 to 21 and organise demonstrations and picketing of government offices from September 25 to 27 throughout the country.

If the Government failed to change its policies, it should quit, Mr. Sankariah said.
