Leadership given out of respect for Moopanar: Vasan
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, SEPT. 5. Acknowledging that the burden of leadership was
cast on him more ``out of respect for Moopanar than a faith in my
abilities'', the new TMC president, Mr. G. K. Vasan, signalled
his readiness to take a plunge into active politics.
In his first public statement, he said he had been entrusted with
the responsibility of heading the party at a time when the
country was facing several economic, social and political
challenges.
While calling for the same support the cadres extended to his
father, he assured them that he would strive to live up to their
expectations and faiths.
Mr. Vasan extended his `special thanks' to the Chief Minister,
Ms. Jayalalithaa, for her `big help' in conducting the funeral.
He also thanked the Vice-President, Mr. Krishan Kant, the
Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, the Karnataka Chief
Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr.
Vilasarao Deshmukh, the former President, Mr. R. Venkatraman, the
former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi and several leaders for
offering condolences.
