Japan may lift sanctions against India
TOKYO, SEPT. 9. Japan is considering lifting of sanctions it
imposed on India after New Delhi's nuclear tests in 1998, The
Japan Times said today.
The report, citing official sources, said the Government would
seek approval from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)
ahead of the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee's scheduled
visit to Tokyo in early December.
Whether the party will approve it remains unclear. Some LDP
lawmakers argued that the sanctions should remain until India
signs the 1996 Comprehensive (Nuclear) Test Ban Treaty, the paper
said.
