Kottayam retains overall title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 9. Kottayam logging 201 points retained the overall title as the two-day 45th State senior athletics meet concluded at the University stadium here on Sunday. The host Thiruvananthapuram (145.5) and Pathanamthitta (134) stood second and third respectively.

Five new meet records were set on the final day, which saw Kottayam erase one of the oldest record from the books in women's 4x400m relay.

Preeja Sreedharan of Kottayam set the day's first record in women's 5000m under energy sapping conditions. Preeja clocked 17:53:10 and lapped all the runners enroute to the new record rewriting the old mark of K.P.Suma (18:24.40) set in 1999.

Kottayam women's quartet of M.K. Rekha, S. Resmi, Bijimol K. Chacko and Anisha K. Vijayan broke a 17-year-old record in 4x400m relay. The Kottayam side clocked 3:49.90 to better Kannur's old mark (3:54.00) set in 1984.

Shebin Joseph also of Kottayam broke P.V. Raju's eight-year-old record in men's 400m hurdles. The 24-year-old clocked 52.20s to break Raju's 1993 mark of 53.10s.

Long jumper turned decathlete, P.J. Vinod (Thiruvananthapuram) pushed former record holder Jiju Jacob to third spot with a new record in decathlon. Vinod finished the 10- item event with 6305 points against the old mark of 6076 points.

Robin Varghese of Thiruvanthapuram destroyed the field in triple jump and set a new record in the process. Robin in his fifth attempt lept 15.85m to better B.S.Vinod's 15.76m set in 1995.

The Kerala Sports Council president, Mr. C. Mohanachandran, who was the chief guest at the closing ceremony, gave away the prizes.
