SIMI chief in M.P. goes underground

BHOPAL, SEPT. 29. Altogether 18 members of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) have been arrested in Madhya Pradesh, since the Centre imposed a ban on the organisation, even as its State unit chief, Mr. Kamaruddin Nagori, has gone underground, police said today. Two members of the outfit were arrested in Jabalpur last night, police added.

``Although the SIMI had a network in 11 of the 45 districts of the State, it had only 60 active members,'' a police official said.

138 held in Maharashtra

About 138 activists of the SIMI have so far been arrested in Maharashtra even as police continued to be on high alert.

Of these, 31 were placed under arrest in Mumbai alone, police said here today. About 63 persons were rounded up from various parts of the State since Friday, sources added.

Account with J&K Bank

In Ahmedabad, two bank accounts operated by the SIMI have been frozen even as search continued for the absconding Gujarat leaders of the outfit, police said.

One of the accounts was maintained with the Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd., police said adding the source of the funding was being investigated.

So far only three activists have been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 in Gujarat, the sources said.

Curfew relaxed

In Lucknow, the district authorities today relaxed curfew in four police stations in the old city area for three hours following improvement in the situation, a top police official said.

The curfew was relaxed from 10 a.m. People came out of their houses to buy essential commodities, the SSP, Mr. B.B.Bakshi said.
