Steps to get accreditation for engineering degrees
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, OCT .11.The Institution of Engineers
(India)---IE(I)--is striving to obtain international
accreditation for engineering degrees awarded by Indian
universities to ensure the global movement of engineers.
A preliminary meeting in this regard was convened by the
Accreditation Board of Technical Education in Washington in the
U.S. some time ago, which was attended by 62 countries. The board
had sought information from India on the minimum standards
available, the manner in which examinations were being conducted
and so on. The information on these issues are being collected
now.
Once the approval is obtained, international accreditation can be
obtained based on inspection of individual institutions and
courses offered by them. The IE(I) has also sought the status of
an open university, which is still to be approved.
These facts were stated here on Wednesday by the representatives
of the State Centre of the IE(I) at a press conference held in
connection with the institute's ninth all-India convocation and
technicians' and students' convention scheduled here for October
13 and 14. A technical seminar on the role of engineers in rural
development will be held on the second day.
As many as 500 of the 2,000 graduates will receive their degrees
in person at the convocation. Dr.R.Natarajan, Director, IIT,
Chennai, and Chairman (Designate), All-India Council of Technical
Education, will deliver the convocation address. The Minister of
State for Higher Education, Dr.G.Parameshwar, will give away
awards and prizes.
Dr.P.K.Shanbhag, Chairman of the State centre and also of the
organising committee, Dr.M.P.Chowdiah, co-chairman of the
convocation, and Dr.D.Kencharase Gowda, organising secretary, who
addressed the press conference, said the technicians' and
students' convention, and technical seminar would be inaugurated
by Mr.H.P.Jamdar, President, IE(I). Dr.Chowdiah would deliver the
