Steps to get accreditation for engineering degrees

BANGALORE, OCT .11.The Institution of Engineers (India)---IE(I)--is striving to obtain international accreditation for engineering degrees awarded by Indian universities to ensure the global movement of engineers.

A preliminary meeting in this regard was convened by the Accreditation Board of Technical Education in Washington in the U.S. some time ago, which was attended by 62 countries. The board had sought information from India on the minimum standards available, the manner in which examinations were being conducted and so on. The information on these issues are being collected now.

Once the approval is obtained, international accreditation can be obtained based on inspection of individual institutions and courses offered by them. The IE(I) has also sought the status of an open university, which is still to be approved.

These facts were stated here on Wednesday by the representatives of the State Centre of the IE(I) at a press conference held in connection with the institute's ninth all-India convocation and technicians' and students' convention scheduled here for October 13 and 14. A technical seminar on the role of engineers in rural development will be held on the second day.

As many as 500 of the 2,000 graduates will receive their degrees in person at the convocation. Dr.R.Natarajan, Director, IIT, Chennai, and Chairman (Designate), All-India Council of Technical Education, will deliver the convocation address. The Minister of State for Higher Education, Dr.G.Parameshwar, will give away awards and prizes.

Dr.P.K.Shanbhag, Chairman of the State centre and also of the organising committee, Dr.M.P.Chowdiah, co-chairman of the convocation, and Dr.D.Kencharase Gowda, organising secretary, who addressed the press conference, said the technicians' and students' convention, and technical seminar would be inaugurated by Mr.H.P.Jamdar, President, IE(I). Dr.Chowdiah would deliver the keynote address. Dr.K.Balaveera Ready, Vice-Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University, would deliver the valedictory address.
