Ebony comes to Chennai

CHENNAI, OCT. 11. Chennai has been going through a retail
revolution in the last three years, with big players like RPG,
Rahejas', Lifestyle, Shoppers' Stop invading the town. It is now
Ebony's turn to join the bandwagon.
Ebony, which will be opening its seventh store in Chennai and
eighth in Indore during this month, started its first Indian
retail outlet store in New Delhi in 1994. It plans to open 12 new
stores across the country by 2002-03. Ebony, part of the $ 350
million DS Group, is engaged in infrastructure, real estate, IT,
hotels and leisure management and retailing. The group is
planning to expand its retailing operations in India and has set
aside Rs. 130 crores for the purpose. It is planning to open
three more outlets one each in Bangalore, Hyderabad and
Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
At a press conference here today, Mr. H. S. Narula, head of the
DS Group and Executive Director of Ebony said the Chennai store
which would be opened on 14th of this month would be located at
Nungambakkam High Road. The stores would be spread across 40,000
sq. ft, would be largest in the city, he claimed.
Mr. Narula said Ebony would be positioned as 'The complete
department store'. Its six floors would stock items ranging from
households wares, cosmetics, jewellery and perfumes to garments
for men, women and children and other branded items. It had tied-
up with the city-based appliance retailer Vivek's for kitchen
gadgets and Bata for footwear. It would also locate its concept
bookstore wordsworth, which had in turn has tied up with Qwiky's
Coffee Pub.
