Woven attractions
RANG MAHAL, a Government of West Bengal registered weavers'
society, brings an affordable range of colourful jamdaani,
tanghail, Dhaccai and hand-embroidered saris featuring the
traditional embroidery forms of West Bengal, for the festive
season. Woven by the languishing breed of jamdaani master weavers
in the Nadia district of West Bengal, the jamdaani saris both
with and without zari, are well crafted in pleasing off whites,
greys, soft greens and so on with typical woven motifs. The
floral motifs are distinct and show the intricate skills of the
weavers.
The Dhaccai and, jamdaani saris, many of them sprinkled with
woven butties, have been embellished with sujani, kantha, banni
and soof embroidery. The embroidery, though not very intricate,
captures the spirit of the embroidery forms and lends a festive
look to the saris and salwar kurta ensembles. Many of the salwar
kurta sets are attractive and reasonably priced. Hand-painted
mull saris in soft pastel shades are also on display at the sale.
The Rang Mahal sale is held solely for the benefit of the weavers
of Nadia district. The exhibition-cum-sale, which is being held
at the Poompuhar showroom, Anna Salai, ends on October 30.
