A vindictive tool
Sir, - The POTO would put democracy in peril. People like
Fitzmann Stephen, who drafted the Evidence Act, had the wisdom to
include a provision which said confession to police was not
admissible. Already there are reports of police excesses and the
new law would become a tool for vindictive acts.
Though the TADA had been repealed, the fate of the people already
booked under it is not known. The Government must make the
statistics public before going in for a new law to counter
terrorism.
S.S. Venkat Subramanian,
Chennai
