Auto sales pick-up in April-Oct.

NEW DELHI, NOV. 2. Passenger car producers Maruti Udyog, Hyundai Motor and Toyota Kirloskar have reported pick-up in sales during April-October 2001-02 while Hindustan Motors has recorded an 8 per cent drop in sales. Honda Siel, for its part, has experienced a marginal decline in sales during the period under review.

Maruti Udyog, India's largest car maker, today said its domestic sales have increased by 14.2 per cent to 20,172 cars during October from 17,670 cars in the year-ago month. Sales, however, dropped by 29.8 per cent as compared to 28,745 cars sold in September this year.

Overall, Maruti sold 20,882 cars in October, including exports of 650 cars, a company statement said.

Cumulative sales (April-October 2001-02) went up by 6 per cent to 1.89 lakh cars from 1.79 lakh cars sold in the year-ago period.

Maruti sold 6,811 units of the entry model 800cc car and 3,988 units of the Omni van during October. Sales of the premium small cars Zen, Alto, Wagon-R stood at 4,566, 1,662 and 1,680 units respectively.

The company also sold 576 units of the newly launched multi- purpose-vehicle Versa. Besides, 865 and 24 units of the mid-size car Esteem and premium mid-size car Baleno respectively were sold. In addition, 211 units of the multi-utility-vehicle Gypsy were sold during October.

The company said the overall car market had declined by 4.5 per cent during this fiscal.
