Second round of VRS from Ashok Leyland
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, NOV. 2. Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland is
in the process of putting in place one more voluntary retirement
scheme.
The management is reported to have already initiated parleys with
the workers' union on structuring the proposed VRS. Efforts are
also under way to `sensitise' workmen on the excess manpower and
the need to trim labour especially at a time when the automobile
industry, in general, is facing a tough business environment.
Though the move is primarily aimed at right-sizing the Ennore
facility, management sources have indicated that the new VRS
could cover workers across all plants of Ashok Leyland.
``A clear picture is still to emerge. Various options are now
being evaluated," a ranking company official told The Hindu.
It is gleaned that the management is hoping to cut labour by
little over 1,000 through the proposed VRS. Sources said this
time around the management could come out with an attractive
package.
