Tata team cancels visit to plant

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM, NOV. 2. Representatives of Tata Co., who had come here to inspect the Salem Steel Plant, left today without visiting the plant site. Meanwhile, the employees, after calling off a two-day stand-off decided to resume work tomorrow.

The Tata team accompanied by some officials from the Steel Authority of India Ltd., landed here on Wednesday night to ascertain the value of plant and machinery as part of its bid to acquire the plant.

But as the employees were picketing the plant to voice their protest against the privatisation move of the Central Government, the team cancelled its visit to the plant.

Plant sources said it was up to the Tatas to decide whether to send another team later. It has to be seen whether in the wake of the picketing, the Jindal Group would despatch its assessors by November-end.

Mr. P.Panneerselvam, convenor of the Save Salem Steel Committee (comprising eight unions including the CITU, INTUC, ATP and PTS), said the management had informed the unions about the Tata team's visit only on Monday, therefore there was no time left for giving a strike notice.
