Love your liver

LIFE DEPENDS on the liver.

No pun intended here. Liver is indeed the organ that fashions your life and lifestyle. It is, again, easily one of the most vulnerable organs. Where it needs treatment, it is usually prolonged and arduous and the cost incurred is always high.

Want to know more about the liver? Click on to chennailiverfoundation.org. The site offers a run down on the who-what-when-where-why-how of the liver, its functions and the common ailments. Got further doubts? Check out the FAQs.

The website is an effort by the Chennai Liver Foundation, a recently-formed trust to help patients suffering from chronic liver diseases, to maintain an online database of donors and recipients of organs for transplantation. Apart from educating the populace about liver and its diseases, the foundation, through the site, aims at bridging the gap between the donor and the recipient, on any organ.

A registration form has been posted online for enrolment of donors, as also for those who would like to receive an organ, be it the liver, eye, kidney, blood or heart.

The foundation, headed by hepatic surgeon Dr. R.P. Shanmugam, is working towards enlisting skilled hands for transplantation and post-surgery intensive care. Efforts were also on to build infrastructure required for a transplantation of some organs, the liver for instance, which required special care.

But everything comes at a cost and this effort is no exception.
