Depression weakens, moves towards Orissa coast

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, NOV 12 North Coastal Andhra came out of storm threat on Monday with the depression, instead of intensifying as expected, moved away from the vicinity of Visakhapatnam towards Orissa coast after weakening into a low pressure area.

The weather had kept the Government and people on tenterhooks for a week. Officials of Nellore and Prakasam districts spent sleepless nights being on alert.

Even as the two districts geared to meet the challenge, the low pressure area moved towards Visakhapatnam almost travelling parallel to the coast. And there, it turned into a depression on Sunday. The Government this time sounded a red alert in five districts -- Sriakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari.

But the system moved towards Orissa coast, much to the relief of officials manning the control rooms at the Secretariat and at district headquarters.

There was rain at a few places in Coastal Andhra while the weather was mainly dry in Rayalaseema and dry in Telangana. Kalingapatnam recorded a heavy rainfall of 7 cm.

The other chief amounts of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending this morning were: Visakhapatnam 6 cm; Sompet 5 cm; Visakhapatnam Airport, Tekkali 4 cm each; Srungavarapukota 3 cm and; Anakapalle, Bobbili, Cheepurupalli and Salur each 2 cm.

Forecast for Tuesday: Light to moderate rain likely at a few places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, isolated rains over Rayalaseema and the rest of Coastal Andhra and, mainly sunny weather in Telangana.
