Self-financing arts, science colleges likely: Soopy

PATHANAMTHITTA, NOV. 17. The Education Minister, Mr. Nalakath
Soopy, has said that the Government was seriously thinking of
sanctioning arts and science colleges and higher secondary
schools in the self-financing sector.
The Minister was inaugurating a programme in connection with
the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Catholicate College here
today.
The Minister said the managements of many unaided schools with
excellent track records had already approached the Government
seeking self-financing Plus Two institutions as well as arts and
science colleges.
Mr. Soopy said the Government's poor financial position seldom
permitted it to sanction any more aided schools and colleges in
the State. The State Planning Board was of a similar view on the
issue, he added.
Mr. Soopy said the Government was seriously considering setting
up a higher education council incorporating all the universities
in the State.
Another proposal before the Government was to set up schools
following foreign syllabus in different parts of the State for
the children of Gulf Malayalis, the Minister added.
He lauded the role of Christian educational institutions in the
development of the State's education sector.
The manager of the Malankara Orthodox Church Colleges,
Philippose Mar Eusebius, presided. Mr. Justice Benjamin Koshy of
the High Court inaugurated the legal cell at the college.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Dr.
N. Raveendranath, delivered the keynote address. The Director of
the College Development Council, Dr. K.G. Narayana Pillai, Mr.
K.K. Nair, MLA, Prof. Madhu Eravankara, Prof. John Kurien and the
college principal, Rev. K.T. Mathewkutty, also spoke.
