NCP unit splits

SHILLONG, NOV. 17.The split in the NCP in Meghalaya came out in the open today with only two party Ministers attending an emergency meeting convened by the party general secretary, Mr. Purno A. Sangma, while the 12 other legislators held a separate meeting with Mr. Lotsing Sangma, promoted two days ago as Deputy Chief Minister, in the F.K. Mawlong coalition Goverment.

Mr. P.A. Sangma told reporters that a 48-hour deadline from 5 p.m. had been given to all party legislators to ``withdraw support'' to the Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum Government or face ``disciplinary action''.

He said the NCP Ministers, Mr. Misalim War and Dr. F.A. Khonglam, and all district party leaders attended the meeting.

The meeting, he said, unanimously decided to abide by the directive of the party general secretary, Mr. Tariq Anwar, who had written to the State unit president, Mr. Robert Kharsiing, to withdraw support to the Mawlong Government.
