Varanasi's claim

Sir, - I am glad the Government is vigorously pursuing with the UNESCO the cause of declaring Varanasi or Kashi the oldest heritage city of the world. The move has become necessary in view of the fact that the world body has already declared Rome and Athens the oldest cities of the world and accordingly the U.N., the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and others are spending huge amounts to preserve their heritage.

Varansi is the oldest city. If a second city is to be declared old, it is Srirangam in Tamil Nadu. I hope all of us will support this national cause. Mohan Bhatnagar, New Delhi
