Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Withdraw the hikes

Sir, - As pointed out in your Editorial, ``Victory in Court'' (Dec. 5), the legal decks have been cleared for Ms. Jayalalithaa to become the Chief Minister again. Whether she will occupy the chair immediately or wait till she gets elected depends on the advice of her legal experts.

From the public point of view, her immediate return will be beneficial compared to the prospect of having a proxy Chief Minister. It is hoped that she will reconsider the recent hike in bus fares, milk prices and power tariff as they could affect her electoral prospects.

S. Venugopalan,

Chennai

Sir, - Your Editorial on Ms. Jayalalithaa's acquittal was a soul-searching and significant pointer. We hope her priorities will be to check illegal brewing of liquor and tackle widespread poverty and not the unfinished task of impounding Mr. Karunanidhi.

Mythili Sitaramiyer,

Chennai
