'Steps will be taken to put down rowdyism'
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, DEC. 9. Rowdyism will be dealt with severely, the new Police Commissioner, Mr. K. Vijay Kumar, said today.
He also praised the present team of officers and sought their cooperation. ``We already have a good team with excellent officers. Now it shall be improved further,'' he told mediapersons after assuming charge.
Mr. Vijay Kumar signed the papers and exchanged pleasantries with the outgoing Commissioner, Mr. K. Muthukaruppan. ``Keep in touch,'' he told Mr. Muthukaruppan, after which he personally accompanied him to his car. A visibly shaken Mr. Muthukaruppan did not speak much.
Mr. Vijay Kumar, who was fielded a few questions, requested the media persons to allow him to get settled first.
To a query relating to crime and traffic problems, the Commissioner said these were endemics not specific to Chennai alone but to all highly urbanised cities. ``The existing laws will be used to improve conditions considerably,'' he said.
On the media-police rapport in the backdrop of August 12 fracas that left several journalists injured, the Commissioner said the relationship was ``on a healthy note'' right now. ``It is better to bury the past and look ahead'', he said.
Earlier, he was closeted with Mr. Muthukaruppan for a while.
