No move for renewal of ties with AIADMK: Jana Krishnamurthy
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, DEC. 16. Just as the BJP State unit appeared to be inching closer to the ruling AIADMK, the national president, Mr. Jana Krishnamurthy, today rejected the speculation of renewal of alliance `totally baseless'.
``I want to put an end to all speculation of the BJP and the AIADMK coming closer'', Mr. Krishnamurthy told reporters here. The BJP and the DMK were part of the National Democratic Alliance and the ties ``will continue''.
The BJP leader's significant assertion came just two days after the State president, Mr. S. P. Kirubanidhi, had declared that the AIADMK's attitude had changed and ``anything could happen'' on the alliance front.
As the State leader's statements in favour of the AIADMK had caused considerable discomfiture in the DMK camp, the national leadership has launched a damage-limiting exercise here.
In unequivocal terms, Mr. Krishnamurthy said the AIADMK's support for the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance did not mean that the two parties were coming closer. If political parties came forward to support the POTO, they were welcome.
However, linking the support for the ordinance with renewal of alliances between the AIADMK and the BJP was part of an `unfounded speculation', he said. For, the BJP was seeking support of the Congress and the Left parties also for the POTO. When scribes pointed out that the State general secretary, Mr. H. Raja, recently said the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa was a `model for patriotism', Mr. Krishnamurthy said, ``this is why I want to put an end to all speculation''.
To a question on Mr. Kirubanidhi's statement that there was a distinct change in Ms. Jayalalithaa's attitude towards the BJP, Mr. Krishnamurthy insisted that the BJP's ties with the DMK continued and there was no change in the position.
Significantly, Mr. Jana Krishnamurthy made the rebuttal in the presence of Mr. Kirubanidhi.
