Pramila Dandavate dead

NEW DELHI, JAN. 1. Ms. Pramila Dandavate, former MP and prominent champion of women's rights died here today following a massive heart attack. She was 73. She is the wife of the former Finance Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader, Prof. Madhu Dandavate.

Ms. Dandavate complained of uneasiness around midnight and was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. She is survived by her husband and son Uday, who is in the U.S.

Elected to the Lok Sabha from a Mumbai constituency in the seventies, she had then participated in many agitations in Maharashtra against the price hike, an era characterised by latne morcha, taken out by a large number of women carrying rolling pins.

Later, she focussed her attention on women issues and was president of the Mahila Dakshyata Samiti, a prominent organisation espousing the cause of women.

`Able parliamentarian'

The President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, today described Ms. Pramila Dandavate as an `able parliamentarian' who devoted her public life to women's empowerment. In a message to Prof. Madhu Dandavate, the President said, ``I am deeply grieved. My wife Usha and I extend heartfelt condolences to you.''

The Maharashtra Governor, Mr. P.C. Alexander, said in Mumbai that Ms. Dandavate stood for Gandhian values all her life and championed causes that were in the nation's best interests.
