Kidnap bid

MUMBAI, JAN. 1. An attempt to kidnap a `prominent film personality' was foiled by police here today. Three gangsters were killed in the encounter.

Working on a tip-off that Rajan Shrinivas Jatan, leader of the `Jatan gang', and two of his associates had plans to abduct a film personality returning from a new year party, Kandivili police laid a trap near a bus stop at Madh road in Malvani. When the three arrived around 7.30 a.m. in a Maruti van, police asked them to surrender. But they whipped out firearms and began firing at the police party. In the return fire the three sustained bullet injuries. They were rushed to the Bhagwati hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival, police said. They were wanted in at least 40 cases of kidnapping, extortion and dacoity in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Navi Mumbai. A foreign-made 9 mm pistol, two revolvers and a cellular phone were recovered from the spot.
