BANGALORE, JAN. 16. The Republic Day Flower Show at the Lalbagh Gardens will be inaugurated on Friday by the Mayor, K.Chandrasekhar.

The show, organised since 1922 by the Mysore Horticultural Society, has seen a steady increase in entries. This year, there are 419 participants in the gardens section, 531 for Ikebana, Indian floral art, Bonsai, and vegetable carvings, and 718 exhibits for the main horticultural show in the Glass House.

While the Mayor will inaugurate the horticultural show, the exhibition of Ikebana, Bonsai, and Floral Art will be declared open on Saturday by Lakshmi Chandrasekhar. The prize distribution to winners in different categories will be held at the M.H.Marigowda Hall in Lalbagh on January 25. The ministers, Kagodu Thimmappa, Raja Amareshwara Naik, and T.B.Jayachandra, and Ramalinga Reddy, Jayanagar MLA, will be chief guests.

The Rose Society of Karnataka has organised the All-India Rose Show on January 22 and 23 in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, and this will be an added attraction this year. On January 25, schoolchildren will be allowed free entry to the flower show from 8 a.m. to noon.

The society has launched promotional activities such as training of women on Ikebana, Indian floral art, vegetable carving, and Bonsai. The show at Lalbagh includes the garden competition in which Government departments, public sector undertakings, and corporates participate. It will also have stalls related to gardening in which companies such as Khoday Biotech, Indo-American Hybrid Seeds, Namdhari Seeds, and Krishnendra Nursery, and the Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Spices Board, Coffee Board, Coconut Development Board, Coir Development Board, and Karnataka Compost Development Corporation will exhibit their products and technologies. These will aim at retaining Bangalore's reputation as the Garden City of India.
