Flag code

Sir, — It is not a good idea to change the flag code to allow the national flag to be flown by everyone. It pains me to see flags strewn on the streets and trampled upon after Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. The demand to allow its free use seems to have been driven by a misplaced sense of freedom. If the dignity of the flag is to be protected, its use should be restricted.

A.S. Mahadevan,
Bangalore

Sir, — Quite apart from a mere liberalisation of the flag code so that anyone can fly the tricolour, the general public should be well educated on this. For instance, how many are aware that if the flag is torn or damaged, it should not be kept away or discarded, but be given a decent burial?

D. Natesan,
Chennai
